At the beginning of 2017, I found myself feeling a bit lost in my business, and severely lacking in inspiration. I decided to join a group of photographers in a personal project that centered around getting in the frame with our children. Little did I know, this project would change the course of my life. What once began as a way for me to involve myself in a few extra photos with my daughter, transformed into a deep exploration of self and a journey toward self acceptance. Through the last few years I have developed meaningful friendships, grown as an artist, and also forged a beautiful path toward nurturing self love. I have also become a teacher and mentor of self portraiture, which has been the highlight of my career so far. The art of self portraiture has not only enhanced my personal view of myself, but it’s guiding me to be the mother that my daughter needs. In the words of Naomi Wolf, “A mother who radiates self-love and acceptance actually vaccinates her daughter against low self-esteem”. This is why I shoot self portraits…and it will continue to be my purpose as I turn old and grey.
